You & I were walking along the river towards the railway bridge &
we had a heated discussion in which you made a remark about 'national character'
that shocked me by its primitiveness.
I then thought: what is the use of studying philosophy
if all that it does for you is to enable you to talk with some plausibility
about some abstruse questions of logic, etc, & if it does not improve your thinking
about the important questions of everyday life, if it does not make you more conscientious than
any … journalist in the use of the DANGEROUS phrases such people use for their own ends.

そこで君は「国民性」について言い出して、私はその意見の幼稚さにショックを受けた。
あのとき私はこう思っていた。哲学を学ぶことは何の役に立つのだろう。
もしも哲学が、論理学などの難問についてもっともらしい理屈がこねられるようになるくらいしか
君の役に立たないのだとしたら、また、もしも哲学が日常生活の重要な問題について
君の考える力を向上させないのだとしたら、そして、もしも哲学が、「国民性」というような
危険極まりない常套句を自分の目的のために使うジャーナリスト程度の良心くらいしか
君に与えないのだとしたら、哲学を学ぶことに何の意味があるだろう。
